Choosing a Launch

Your launch choice on Saginaw Bay is a strategic decision that shapes your entire trip. Each launch provides access to different fishing zones and carries different wind exposure profiles. A launch that works beautifully in a southwest wind may be miserable in a northeast blow. The scoring model ranks launches daily based on which zones are scoring highest and how wind direction interacts with each launch's exposure.

Linwood Beach Marina

Linwood Beach Marina is the primary launch for the west side and inner bay. Located along the western shoreline, Linwood provides fast access to the walleye trolling lanes that run parallel to shore. The marina offers reasonable protection for staging in moderate west wind, but becomes exposed in sustained east and northeast patterns. This is the most popular launch for walleye anglers targeting the west-side corridor.

Au Gres Harbor

Au Gres Harbor sits at the northern end of the west side, making it the launch of choice for anglers targeting the outer transitions. The harbor handles east and southeast exposure better than many alternatives and provides the shortest run to the outer bay from the western shore. Au Gres is the go-to when fish have pushed north and you need distance from shore.

Sebewaing Harbor

Sebewaing Harbor serves the east side and Thumb shoreline. Useful for perch anglers working the east-side flats and for walleye trips when the east side is scoring higher than the west. Exposure climbs quickly in sustained west and northwest wind, so check the conditions before committing to an east-side trip from Sebewaing.

Quanicassee DNR Launch

The Quanicassee DNR Launch is a state-managed access point on the east side, providing a short run to the east-side fish. The shallow approach means you may need to navigate carefully at lower water levels. West and southwest winds push chop directly into this launch area. Best suited for calm-day trips targeting the Thumb shoreline structure.

Bay City State Park Launch

Bay City State Park provides a protected option for trips near the river mouth transition. This is a good choice for short-window trips when you want to stay close to safety. The park launch handles most wind directions reasonably well due to its sheltered location, though north and northeast blow can still create problems. Ideal for small boats and kayak anglers.

Essexville Access

Essexville Access is a quick inner-bay option for small-boat sessions. Located near the south end of the bay, it provides the shortest run to the inner-bay perch flats. Like Bay City State Park, the exposure is primarily to north and northeast wind. This launch is best for anglers who want to be on the water quickly and stay in protected water.

Shipping Channel Access

The Shipping Channel Access serves anglers targeting the channel edges. This is a specialized launch for days when channel drift conditions set up and wind is not stacking waves on the channel. North and northwest exposure is the primary concern. When conditions cooperate, the channel edges can produce some of the best fishing on the bay.
